A look at the day:
Said our final goodbyes in Katui and blessed the pastors.
Traveled by matatu with Lampstone and Pastor Joshua to Nairobi in the
early morning.
Visited the Mathare slums:
Walked with people and spread joy.
The young children, especially those around 3 - 8 years old, shared
much joy already, in spite of their circumstances... so many smiles.
Talked with James, a man whose leg is crippled by polio. He prayed to
accept Jesus.
Met up with Janet, Lampstone's sweetheart, in downtown Nairobi.
Had lunch with Lampstone, Janet, and Pastor Joshua.
Said goodbye until Saturday to our three friends. We were then put on
a matatu to Nakuru.
Talked with a lady named Terry during the trip who was greatly encouraged.
Sam Gitonga, graciously picked us up in Nakuru. We also met Joseph, a
Hero who has graduated from the 'Heroes of the Nation' orphanage.
Visited with Violet Gitonga over dinner. She shared about the
orphanage's history.
Joined Weston Gitonga upstairs to pray for healing. Weston has been
very influential for God in many ways in this area. He has had
diabetes, stomach ulcers, and sadness due to a close friend's death.
He is seeing beyond obstacles, however, and is extremely motivated to
keep living in strength for our God! He got up and jogged in circled
in his room after we prayed for him, though he was still in great
pain. Pray with us for total healing for Weston!
Visited with another man named Samuel who leads much of the work at
Destiny bible college in Nyahururu. He plans to be our guide for the
next couple days! :-)
Fun notes & praises:
Pastor Joshua is very familiar with Nairobi, and greatly blessed us by
guiding us while in that massive town.
A matatu is a usually medium-sized van which has up to 15 seats. It is
a very efficient means of transportation. It does take a bit to get
used to the extremely competive driving style.
Turkey vultures perched in some Nairobi trees. Ducks and turkeys were
being raised in the slums. We passed a herd of Zebras which appeared
to be fenced in. The Gitongas have a dog and a cat.
We rode past Rift Valley today... an incredible sight.
Sam Gitonga manages a local radio station here in Nakuru. He also
leads students from the orphanage in a media-focused trade school for
those who are passionate about media. He hopes to expand into
television when the opportunity arises.
